About the GMT-Master II

The GMT-Master II was built to solve a real problem for international travelers and airline crews: tracking two time zones simultaneously without doing mental math. The original GMT-Master launched in 1954 for Pan Am pilots; the "II" designation arrived in 1982 with an independently adjustable hour hand, letting wearers set local time while keeping the 24-hour GMT hand locked to a reference zone.

The two-tone ceramic bezels introduced over the past decade, "Batman" (blue/black), "Pepsi" (blue/red), "Sprite" (black/green), and "Root Beer" (brown/black on gold), have become some of the most recognizable colorways in modern watchmaking. Each nickname reflects genuine collector culture rather than marketing invention, and each has developed its own distinct demand curve based on rarity and dial material.

Like the Daytona, the GMT-Master II suffers from a persistent gap between retail availability and demand, particularly for steel ceramic-bezel references. This scarcity is reflected directly in secondary market pricing, where certain combinations have traded well above MSRP for years with no sign of softening.

For collectors, the GMT-Master II sits at an interesting intersection: it's genuinely useful as a travel watch, visually distinct enough to be instantly recognizable, and has a complicated enough production history (different bezel materials, two-tone vs full steel, jubilee vs oyster bracelet) that there's real depth to study before buying. On WatchQuant, tracking 30-day price momentum on specific bezel colorways is often more informative than looking at the GMT-Master II family as a single aggregate.
